Waiting for Anya First edition Author Michael Morpurgo Country United Kingdom Language English Genre Historical novel Publisher William Heinemann Ltd. Publication date 1990 Media?type Print ( Hardback & Paperback) Pages 178 ISBN 0-434-95205-2 Waiting for Anya is a children's novel by Michael Morpurgo, first published in Great Britain in 1990, by William Heinemann. It is set in Lescun, in a mountainous region of southern France on the border with Spain. [1] It was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. [2] It was adapted as a film of the same title released in 2020. [3] Characters [ edit] Jo - The main character, a shepherd boy, around 15 years old. Benjamin - A Jew who smuggles other Jews across the border to Spain. He lost his daughter Anya, and is waiting for her to arrive in Louvain. Widow Horcada - A secretive old widow and Benjamin's mother in law. She is grumpy, but has a strong moral code. Grandpere - Jo's grandfather; involved in the smuggling of children. Hubert - A kind handicapped boy who is very good friends with Jo. Papa - Jo's father, a prisoner of war ( POW), who is in a German prison for most of the story and helps Jo smuggle the children to Spain. Rouf - Jo's faithful, cute, big, white, fluffy, dog. Michael - The leader of the Polish Jews, and the only one who interacts with Jo (through games of chess). He is noted to be extremely small, as he “looks about half [Jo’s] age”, that is, 7 or 8 years old, despite being around the same age as Jo (15 years old). Summary [ edit] The novel is set in the French village of Lescun during the Second World War. Jo Lalande is a young shepherd who is enjoying his childhood; but when his father goes to fight in the war, Jo has to become the man of the house. After an incident with a bear, Jo meets a mysterious man in the forest. He follows the man to his home and learns his secret - he is a Jew named Benjamin who is waiting for his daughter Anya to come find him as they were split from each other, and he is responsible for smuggling Jewish children to safety across the border into Spain, with the help of his mother-in-law, the Widow Horcada. Jo starts to help them to prove that he can be trusted. German soldiers move into town, and things become much more difficult. Although most of the town's inhabitants come to accept the German occupation, the task of getting the Jewish children across the border becomes more dangerous. Jo, his grandfather, Henri, Benjamin and the Widow Horcada devise a plan to get the children across. The plan requires the whole town to help the children escape, and relies on the German soldiers not noticing what is happening. But if they are caught, their lives will not be worth living... After the children have been taken safely across into Spain, except for Benjamin and Léah. The bear that Benjamin saved earlier on in is ends up getting him caught by the Germans. The German soldiers find them and take them to a concentration camp, where they are presumed to have been executed. Shortly thereafter the war ends and Anya has found her way home. Waiting for anya movie reviews. Average rating 3. 94 ? 1, 362 ratings 113 reviews | Start your review of Waiting for Anya A touching story written in a deceptively simple manner. A must read for both young and old! This is the story of Jewish children escaping from Poland and trying to cross the border into Spain while hiding from the German army during WW2. It is the story of a little boy and his family who risk everything to help. As a realistic description of a little bit of history, this little book tugs at your heartstrings and shows you compassion and the best traits of humanity in the middle of a German.. Emotional, moving and Michael Morpurgo at his finest.. Michael Morpurgo writes about difficult times in the past and in the present, and although his writing is aimed at children they are very powerful, realistic and likely to bring a tear or two to your eyes. ‘Waiting for Anya’ is no exception, set in a French village next to the Spanish boarder when World War II was rife and German soldiers made their presence known by their constant patrolling around the village and mountains. A young boy called Jo, experiences a heroic journey when he discovers.. REALLY worth reading! Not normally the type of book that I am drawn to and usually enjoy, but this book is so good that it didn't matter. I believe most people would enjoy it. V emotional, so make sure you stock up on the tissues.. don't read it on pubic transport. Read this to see if our kids would be old enough to begin on Michael Morpugo's books and actually thoroughly enjoyed it myself. Very real characters and a very moving story. Didn't want to put it down. I love Michael Morpurgo. He writes in a very stark, deceptively simple manner which belies the skill behind his work. The ending of this left me feeling physically winded. Amazing writer. This is no exception. Good well written story just as suitable for adults as for teesting story that keeps your attention to the end. Just what you would expect from Michael recommended. Michael Morpurgo weaves a wonderful tale, though I found this story particularly sad [you'll find out why after reading this book]. He never fails to make me cry. This was AMAZING. I loved the story and the... I'll try to write without spoilers. I loved every single second of it and am left in its solemn wake. Saw the author speak. He was a great speaker. I liked him better in person! But this was a solid historical fiction book for kids. WWII. A cracking and realistic tale of occupied France during WWII. Loved it. Favourite part: his ability of build curiosity in the reader. I read this in Year 5 and, whilst I don't remember all of it, I do remember that I thought it very sad and that, as a nine/ten year old, I was touched by the story. Waiting for Anya is about the time through the holocaust in a small town in France. It is about a young boy, name Joe and how his courage grows. Set in a French village in the Second World War, a shepherd named Jo befriends a Jew named Benjamin who is waiting to be reunited with his daughter, Anya, after they were split up from one another. Jo agrees to help Benjamin as German soldier descend on the town. Sadly, Benjamin is caught by the German soldiers and is never reunited with Anya, who returns to the village too late. Not only is this book informative in relation to WWII, the book is extremely thought provoking and gripping. The.. Wonderful story with real characters. This is a simple story, but the village embodies a certain mythic and nostalgic past that I don’t want to move to, but plays effectively on my heart strings. I have no doubt that stories like these played themselves out all across occupied Europe and beyond. There’s a depth to this book that your child will realize if he or she chooses to re-read this in adulthood. Read for school. Writing felt robotic and uncreative, plot rarely kept me interested, and characters were, with a few exceptions, pretty generic and unemotional. The very beginning and very end were alright, and the characters of Leah, Michael, and Widow Horcada are probably what saved this book for a lower grading. This book was so heart warming! I loved it!!! Seriously Morpurgo rocks!!! I have no idea how he comes with such amazing plots!! I cried a lot in this book (that’s a good thing) I really recommend it to everyone Wow this book is so good I liked this book because it was sad yet happy I choose this rating because the he describes everywhere so well you think you are there and he describes the Chas so you think young them. I loved this book. Wow... A decent enough children's book about World War II and the occupation of a small town by German soldiers. But I feel like at the end, they didn't want to say what happened to some of the characters so they took it out on another one. This was a very good book. I think everyone, especially kids should read it. It was a fantastic read! Very realistic. *Spoiler alert* I wish Hubert hadnt died, he was my favorite character. Amazing, Fantastic, love and kindness A brilliant book to end a year of reading on. This has been sitting on my bookshelf for many years and I finally got round to reading it, I wish I had got round to it sooner. Great read. Perfectly written and in such an emotive away. Loved reading about a different aspect of the war from the vantage point of a child. Highly recommended i just generally love reading ww2 fiction books. A nice little Morpurgo story. It brought a tear to my eye. He's one of my fave authors. Really good book. My 9 year old loved it An emotional and very touching book greatly written by Michael Morpurgo. I loved the book but the only thing that I didn't like was the ending.
